Strategy is a filtering system
Content strategy answers: what we publish, for whom, in what order, and how we know it works. For SEO-led publishers, the strategy is inseparable from topic clusters and topical authority.
Four pillars of an SEO content strategy
1. Audience jobs
List 3 - 5 recurring jobs your reader hires content to do. Example: "learn a tactic," "compare tools," "justify budget to boss."
2. Topic portfolio
Clusters with status: planned, in progress, mature. Cap concurrent new clusters at what your team can interlink and refresh.
3. Operating rhythm
Weekly publish slot, monthly pillar review, quarterly audit. Brief every piece with our SEO content brief.
4. Measurement
Leading: published spokes, internal link coverage. Lagging: cluster impressions, conversions, referring domains.
90-day launch plan (template)
- Days 1 - 14: Seed research + cluster map + pillar brief
- Days 15 - 45: Publish pillar + first 4 spokes
- Days 46 - 75: Remaining spokes + internal link pass
- Days 76 - 90: Audit, refresh pillar, start cluster two planning
Distribution without spam
Organic-first does not mean publish-only. Repurpose pillars into newsletters, LinkedIn carousels, and partner syndication - always canonical back to your site.
When to kill content
Noindex or merge if: wrong intent, thin duplicate, or zero impressions after 9 months with no strategic reason to keep. Pruning helps clusters.
